Pack Softball Cruise in Fall Ball Victory

RALEIGH – It felt like spring in October as the lady Wolfpack continued their fall softball session at Dail Softball Stadium on Sunday, October 7. After dropping their first games against UNC and ECU, the NC State took down the Trojans from Fayetteville Technical Community College, 23-0 (7 innings), in the 1 pm game of a doubleheader with a huge second inning.

After a scoreless first inning, the second inning prevailed the Pack to a large, early lead. After a handful of walks and a pitching change in the bottom of the inning, NC State gained 11 runs on only three hits. One of those three hits came during a 6-0 Wolfpack lead when the bases were loaded, and Sam Russ stepped up to the plate. She then hit a home run to further extend the lead. Another scoring surge for the lady Wolfpack came again in the sixth inning, where they posted 7 runs.

Freshman Pitcher Sydney Nester got the start for the Pack and had a very strong performance. The Hillsville, VA native surrounds only 6 hits with a number of strikeouts in the complete game shut-out victory. Timberlyn Shurbutt had a big day hitting. The sophomore had 6 RBI’s in the second and third inning, including her grand slam. Sam Russ, Natalie Jones, and Skylar Johnston were standouts in today’s game.

Fayetteville Tech was a scrappy team but seemed to be overpowered and no match as they could not gain any momentum. The lady Trojans got two hits in the second inning. But only amounted four more hits for the rest of the game.

The Pack continues their fall ball session next Sunday, October 14 against UNCW in a doubleheader at Dail Softball Stadium
