NC State Softball Falls to Syracuse in a tough Series Finale

The Wolfpack softball team came up short, 5 – 3 in a battle under the sun with Syracuse in yesterday’s series finale beginning at noon at Dail Stadium. After the Orange and the Pack split the two previous games in the series, Syracuse was able to come out on top despite an NC State push in the late innings. Syracuse notched their fifth victory in the ACC this season to improve to 5 – 5 in the conference while the Wolfpack dropped their 8th conference game this season making their record 2 – 8 in ACC play.

Syracuse struck first in the top of the first as leadoff hitter Gabby Teran got on base with a single, eventually advanced to third, and came home on a passed ball to take an early 1 – 0 lead. The Wolfpack had an answer in the bottom half of the first inning as NC State’s Sam Russ blasted a solo homerun over the right field wall to tie the game at 1. Just two batters later, infielder Logan Morris smashed another homer to right and the Pack took a 2 – 1 lead into the second. Neither team was able to score in the second inning, but Syracuse was able to knot the score again at 2 – 2 in the top of the third. NC State was unable to capitalize in the bottom half of the inning and both teams came up scoreless in the fourth despite Logan Morris almost getting her second homerun of the day, a deep fly ball that was eventually caught at the wall. In the top of the fifth, the Orange were able to get starting pitcher Sydney Nester out of the game and eventually get the bases loaded against the new pitcher, Kama Woodall with zero outs. NC State was able to turn a wild double play at home plate to gain some momentum with two outs. Syracuse was still able to capitalize as the next batter brought in a runner on a single and a wild pitch brought in another to make the score 4 – 2. The Wolfpack had to bring in pitcher Devin Wallace to get the third out. In the bottom of the fifth, NC State was unable to get anyone on base or score a run. The Orange were able to add another in the top of the sixth on an error to make the score 5 – 2. In the bottom of the sixth, the Pack got runners to first and second and #13 Randi Farricker was able to bring a runner in on an RBI single to get to within 2 runs. The Wolfpack were able to test the Orange but Junior pitcher Alexa Romero, who was strong in this game, was able to get Syracuse out of the inning. NC State was able to secure a 1, 2, 3 inning in the top of the seventh but they were unable to score in the bottom half, dropping the game with a final score of 5 – 3, ultimately losing a hard-fought series to the Syracuse Orange.

The NC State softball team will be back in action on Wednesday at Dail Stadium against in-state opponent ECU. This game will be broadcasted on the ACC Network Extra and is slated to start at 5 p.m.
