Nester and Bats Power Wolfpack Past Elon

Coming of an 18-0 victory against UNC Wilmington in 10 innings the Wolfpack were looking to finish their last fall home game with a victory. Sydney Nester dominated on the mound and the Wolfpack bats lead NC State to a 7-4 victory over Elon.

Nester started the game by blowing through the top of the Elon lineup with three straight strikeouts. The second inning got a little messy after two walks and an error to start the inning but Nester was able to strike out three of the next four batters and keep Elon to one run. Nester finished the game with 6 innings pitched, 1 earned run, 1 hit, 12 strikeouts (3 looking) and 3 walks.

Elon starter Abby Barker held the Wolfpack to one hit in her four innings of work and struck out 5. Barker had good movement on her pitches and the Wolfpack bats clearly had a hard time hitting against her.

Once Barker was out of the game the bats came alive. After a leadoff single by Brigette Nordberd, second basemen Timberlyn Shurbutt fought hard in her at bat and hit an opposite field home run on a 3-2 pitch to give the Wolfpack a 2-1 the lead.

Devin Wallace came in the 7th inning to relieve starter Sydney Hester. After a walk and two quick outs the bases became loaded from another walk and catcher’s interference. Elon then proceeded to clear the bases with a double to give Elon a 4-2 lead.

Following Elon’s big top the the 7th the bats rallied. After two outs and Chandley Garner and Timberlyn Shurbutt walks, catcher Haylee Kobziak came up in the clutch with a 2 RBI triple to tie the game at 4. The next batter was Angie Rizzi, who came up big with a home run to give the Wolfpack a 6-4 lead.

Following Wallace out of the bullpen was Kama Woodall. She shut the Elon offense down out of the bullpen pitching 3.1 innings of scoreless ball earning the win.

In a meaningless bottom of the 10th inning the Wolfpack tacked on another run on Skylar Johnston’s second double of the game.

Next the Wolfpack close out their fall season and look to extend their win streak to 5 tomorrow at Duke at 4:00 pm.
